Is Chicago too dangerous to visit this summer?

I'm thinking of planning a week long trip to Chicago to see a friend of mine. However, I've heard from the news and my travel agent that it's really dangerous to go there this year. Apparently there's a lot of crime/violence this summer? Can anyone give me more information on whether it's really that violent and if I should skip going right now?
